Giant Test

Vauxhall AstraL-v-Citroën GSA Club-v-Peugeot 305GL

Positive but heavy steering makes parking hard work. Dry road cornering is extremely good but tyres are poor in the wet. Sophisticated self-levelling suspension means that even with heavy loads car retains an even keel. Braking power is fantastic although delicate footwork is needed.
Payload is lowest of the three but the central rear bumper lifts with the tailgate for good access.
There's not a lot of room behind the heavy single-spoke wheel but other Citroen controls are magic.
Details: accordian-like switchgear; good handbrake position but with button reversed; cover for valuables.
Conclusion: capable with comfort and character: worth the extra cash.
